    Default The Gee's Longdon

Looking for family history of Ralph Gee of Longdon, Staffordshire. Born 1800's. Family line prior to Ralph is unknown, other than his mother had him out of wedlock.

    Hi Jon,

    Welcome to British-Genealogy.

'1800's' covers quite long time, so can you be a little more precise about his birth date?

The 1861 census shows two Ralph Gee's living in Longdon.
Ralph, 26, ag laborer, born Longdon
    Mary, 30, wife
    Elizabeth, daur, 4
    Fanny, daur, 1 month
    Ralph, son, 2

    Census reference RG9/1977 folio 63 page 1

    Is the elder Ralph yours?

If he is and Mary was born Mary Holland then their marriage certificate has Ralph's father as John Corbett, a labourer.

    Hi Jon,

I've just been reading through a thread that you've contributed to today. It appears you already knew Ralph's purported father (named on Ralph's marriage cert.) was John Corbett. Do you have any other information not mentioned on this thread, which will help with the search?

I've been checking that out as well, Alma. (Great minds think alike. )

Birth registrations of Elizabeth and Ralph junior give mother's maiden name of Holland. So that seems to fit.

However, going back in the census, the most likely 'fit' in 1851 is Ralph Gee, aged 16, farm servant, born Longdon, living in Farewell. HO107/2014 folio 166 page 1.

And in 1841, Ralph, aged 6, living in Longdon, in household of James and Catherine Gee, both aged 35, with Sarah 10, William 8, Mary 4, and Thomas 1. Possibly sharing the house with another William, aged 20.
    Census reference HO107/980/10 folio 8 page 8.

The 1841 census has Sarah Gee age 25. The instructions for the 1841 census were for ages over 15yrs to be rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5. Therefore Sarah could have been 25 - 29yrs, giving a birth of approx. 1812 - 1816.

There's a promising baptism at Longdon St James 30th Mar 1813.
Sarah, dau of Ralph and Mary Gee, Ralph was a wheelwright.

There are other baptisms which fit within the time frame, but I thought the one with father Ralph looked good.

You have a different 1841 than the one I have, Pam.

    Mine has Sarah age 25 and Ralph age 6. Ref: HO107; Piece: 980; Book: 10; Folio:8; Page:8;

Oh, just noticed we both have the same census ref. I'll go back and check.

    I'll go back and check.
I've taken another look and Sarah and Ralph are the only two in the household, next door to them are Thomas Gee 70 and Elizabeth Gee 65.

Sarah Gee is listed as ind. (independent)

    No, 'tis my error, Alma.
For some reason I'm getting confused with James and Ralph. It's James, aged 6, living with James senior and Catherine,on page 7.
You are correct with your census entry and reference.

I will however offer in penance, baptism of Ralph, illegitimate son of Sarah Gee, 22 February 1835 in Longdon.

As Sarah and Ralph are living next door to Thomas and Elizabeth perhaps this baptism is more apt.

Longdon St James, 11th Oct 1812.
Sarah dau of Thomas and Elizabeth Gee,
    Alma
