Okay - I just got the birth certificate of my grandfather, John Parry. It looks like my great-grandfather was in the Royal Marines, unless I am reading incorrectly. It says his occupation was a Marine Fireman (which is hilarious as an occupation, unless I'm reading it wrong!)

I cant see any document, but a Marine Fireman isnt a Royal Marine. It's a fancy way of saying he was a stoker on board ships, ie he shovelled the coal.

Ah, that makes more sense! Must have been a tough job nonetheless. Thanks!

Ancestry's record set Liverpool, England, Crew Lists 1861-1919 has 1901 records for a John Hy Parry aged 29 (mistranstribed as 20 on one record), Fireman of 7 Longville Street. Born Liverpool

At that address in 1901 is a Parry family headed by Henry aged 50 & his wife Sinar? 49

Perhaps Henry was his John Parry's father! That changes a lot of what we thought, because my mum always thought John Parry himself was from Wales!

Ideally you still need the marriage certificate, but there is a marriage in Liverpool 9 Nov 1862 between Henry Parry & Sina Alice Bevan. Using this surname brings up this birth, which matches the age on the Crew List record:

PARRY, JOHN HENRY mmn BEVIN GRO Ref: 1872 S Quarter in WEST DERBY AND TOXTETH PARK Volume 08B Page 264
