I have a settlement entry in 1831 for Robert Jury which states he had been apprenticed to the captain of an east indiaman. He does not appear on the list of merchant navy apprentices. Does anyone know if these vessels trading from London to the east were somehow exempt from registering their apprentices?

If he was working for the East India Company, would he necessarily be listed as merchant navy?

Lesley from my reading of the trade not all the vessels used were actually owned by the company. Many were chartered by the EIC with the owners providing the crew. Just makes it more complicated to understand what happened in any particular instance and not knowing the name of the ship either. I am also assuming this type of apprenticeships was just a form of child labour, with a thirteen year old boy spending three years away and discharged at the end of the voyage without a penny.

I think I’d agreed with all of that!
