    Hello eon,

    Welcome to British-Genealogy.

You don't say what time period you're looking at but records for anyone who served after 1921 (even if they enlisted before then) are still held by the Ministry of Defence.

Details of how to apply for the records can be found here -

You'll need to send a copy of the death certificate as well as thirty pounds for each record required.

If you're talking about someone who served and had left the military prior to 1921, then those records are available on Ancestry (and at least most of them are on Findmypast as well) but over 60% of WW1 records were destroyed by fire and bombing so finding them is not guaranteed.

From the way you phrased your first sentence, I assume that you're talking about finding something on Forces War Records. Those records usually refer to specific records, e.g. prisoner of war, casualties.

If you did come to us via FWR, this explains how BG and FWR connect.
