Hi everyone trying to do a favour for a friend and I have literally hit a brick wall head on which has left me more than confused.
I am trying to locate a gentleman by the name of William Yallop Woolsey who married a Sarah Mays in 1836. Now dear William we believe was born anytime between 1817-1823 although the latter date is more appropriate if you take into consideration when he was married. It is said he was born in Brandon, Suffolk while his wife Sara Mayes [1821-1902]it is believed was born in Norfolk. I believe William was the son of a James Yallop [1797-1875] and an Ann Woolsey [1794-1859] and he was probably born out of wedlock hence his father's name being used as a middle name. William was a tailor as was James. James and Ann wed in 1817 and I am sure I saw a record that indicated it was a couple of months after william was born which would tie in with the theory he was born out of wedlock [his daughter with Sarah did the same thing] and James might still have been in his apprenticeship as a tailor and he wouldn't have been able to wed at that time. On William's marriage certificate one James Yallop is a witness. A theory it is true but plausible.
ON the 1841 census William's age is down as 20 the same as his wife with his young daughter Susannah being 3 and they are in Lakenheath. However all things change on the 1851 census with Sarah, calling herself a tailor's wife, living with her daughter and her father but no william who is living down in Bromley area with a lady name Maria [believed to have been Maria Golding 1828-1870]] and his 2yo son Jonathan who had been born in Sudbury. Maria came from Cavendish, Suffolk. Now I am unable to locate a second marriage for William so it looks as though his marriage had broken down and he relocated with Maria.
He had at least five children with Maria - Jonathan 1849, Emma b/d 1849/50, Mark [1851-1901 and my friend's grt-grandfather], Abraham 1854 and Harriet 1856-1885.
After this date [1851] I can't locate William anywhere while Sarah seems to stay where she is, while Maria looks as though she takes the children back to Suffolk.
So the questions are: Who are William's parents and if possible his correct age and death and did he have a fancy woman and if so what was her proper name.
The profession of tailoring seems to run in the family if I have it right as William and James are both tailors as was his brother [?] Joseph and their grandfather, another Joseph who was born c1771-1831 and who married a lady by the name of Ann Sallows in 1793.
So you see my friends I am in desperate need of help, and I thought researching family was bad enough.
Many thanks for any help or pointers in the right direction

Unless William was masquerading under a different surname, I don't think Jonathan was his son.
Marriages March quarter 1847
GOLDING, Maria
SPRINGFIELD, William
Sudbury Vol. 12 Page. 589
Birth
SPRINGFIELD, JONATHAN WILLIAM CHAPMAN
Mother's maiden name: GOLDING
GRO Reference: 1848 J Quarter in SUDBURY Volume 12 Page 499
As Maria also had a son named Mark I think it is likely that she is the Maria GOLDING who was baptised in 1827 in Cavendish, Suffolk, the daughter of Mark and Clara.

Many thanks.
It had crossed my mind that perhaps Jonathan was not William's son due to the presence of a daughter named Emma supposedly born in the same year to William but in Bromley, Kent as were the rest of his children - Mark, Abraham and Harriet with their mother being Maria. Jonathan does not appear to use his given name of Springfield on the early census although I shall check this out. I had come across a marriage of Maria Golding in 1844 in Cavendish but not one for 1847. It is a tangled web however and one that I have yet to get to the bottom off - if I ever do.
Perhaps William and Maria had an affair and disappeared down to Kent, being a master tailor he would not have had much trouble in getting work. Divorce for both of them would have been impossible as the law stood at that time, so perhaps this was the only option. I know my own great grandfather lived openly with a woman for 13 years before his wife died in the lunatic asylum in which he had placed her. He married the lady within four months of the death of his wife.
You have given me further food for thought, for which I thank you.
Regards

Many thanks for that. I can't seem to find him on the 1861 census although Maria, his 'wife' is now back in Suffolk I think it was [sorry I've put everything away now].
At the moment it is looking like William left his wife Sarah and moved to Farnborough area with Maria and her son Jonathan [by William Springfield her husband] and they lived there and had four more children, the first of which, Emma died. It would appear that Jonathan took the surname of Woolsey.
This is all conjecture as there seems to be little evidence to go on and it is a simple case of reading between the lines and hoping you get it right - I think.
