When I was a child he was employed in the tannery just across the canal from their cottage in Runcorn. An accidental splash of fluid in his eyes ended his career in the leather industry and left him blind.

Following an FoI request the MoD released a list of men who served in WW2 but were born before 1901. The only ones with the surname Weech are as follows:

    TT Weech 4072183 born 12 Aug 1893
    GS Weech S/29824 born 15 Aug 1900
CA Weech 5429102 born 31 Dec 1888 served with 'DCLI'

Thank you Jomot1. I am not sure where that leaves me but it would explain the lack of returns on my queries.

It seems very likely that he was simply a different person with the same name, possibly this one:

WEECH, GEORGE ALBERT (no mmn, so presumably illegitimate)
GRO Reference: 1918 S Quarter in PONTYPRIDD Volume 11A Page 1081

    Here's his death:

    Surname: WEECH
    Forenames/Initials: George Albert
    Rank: SSgt
    Service: Army
    Service Number: 7884942
    Regiment/Corps: REME
Date of Birth: 09 July 1918
    Age: 38
Date of Death: 17 June 1957

According to the indexes he died in Aden.

He was a PoW in WW2 and was in the Royal Armoured Corps, which was formed just before WW2, incorporating the Royal Tank Corps (according to Wilipedia!)

Timed out for adding more to the last post, but his probate record (in case you can tie him to your family somehow) gives his name as George Albert James Henry Weech of 15 Middleton Quarters, Borden, Hampshire. Administration to Inge Marie Weech, Widow.

George A Weech married Ingeburg M Wiegand in Germany in 1951.

If 'your' George was in Wales in 1911 then he may be the George Weech who served in WW1 in the 8th Bn Welsh Regiment, No 24838. First entered a theatre of war 28 Oct 1915 (so enlisted before conscription)& discharged to reserves 31 Mar 1919

I cant find him either, although from cross-checking the GRO the Wych family previously mentioned as living in Power Street, Newport is his mother & siblings (mmn Legg, Elsie's birth registered as Wych)
