    Default John Thomas Ballinger b. ~1743 (Her/Mon)

    Hi All.

I'm new to genealogy (month or so).

I'm struggling to find anything about John Thomas Ballinger b.~1743 (my 5th great grandfather) apart from his wife and children.

I have done a search on the forum already in case someone else has him in their tree, the only one close was in Worcestershire, however I believe he was active in Hereford/Monmouth as that's where the rest of the family come from.

I'm quite eager to know about his ancestors as I believe (from what my Mum has said) that side of the family can be traced to 1066.

    Thanks

    Mark

You've given us very little information to go on. For anyone to help we really need to start with the same information you have - eg details of his wife & children (names, where & when married, baptised etc).

The only online source for that marriage that I spotted is in one of those cryptic Ancestry "select marriages" datasets.

Have you found the original marriage register and checked it?

I'd expect a 1768 marriage register to show the home parishes of the happy couple, whether the marriage was by banns or licence and the names of witnesses. All valuable data to help search further.

I've just did a google on this, and have found the forest of dean family history trust.

They have transcribed details for a John Ballinger who got married on the 15th December 1768 in Dixton.

However, he married an Elizabeth BAKER (not Bessex).

John Ballinger married Elizabeth Bessex at Dixton St Peter 15 December 1768 by Licence. Both otp according to the Chepstow brach of Gwent FHS.

The marriage is also on FreeReg with Elizabeth's surname as Bessex

The Forest of Dean site has a baptism for a John Ballinger 23 October 1735 in Norton, parents William and Mary. As far as I can gather Norton is about 7 miles from Dixton.

Thanks Emeltee, that's a massive help.

John would have been 33 and his wife 17 when they got married, dirty bugger.

Dixton St Peter 15 December 1768 by Licence
If that is so, the questioner needs to track down the marriage licence allegation/bond. These can be goldmines of information.

It is possible the Licence may not have survived. Forest of Dean site do not have a copy.
