Currently researching the service history of a relative who served in the Royal Navy from 1918 onward.
On the continuous service record in 1940 it states that he was pensioned on 13th December. I initially presumed this was because he had left service but research informed me he continued in service. The day after he was pensioned it states his Rating as AB(6) Pens., presumably meaning pensioned. Does anyone know what this means?
He proceeded to volunteer for further service after an offer for Release in Class A in 1945, leading me to think he did not end service in 1940.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome in, Cheesy.
When was he born? What was his trade? Was he, perhaps, a specialist who was called back as needed?

If he enlisted in 1918, by 1940 he would have served for twenty-two years.
Does his record state how long he initially signed-on for?
He possibly became eligible for a pension after the completion of twenty-two years, even if he didn't actually retire then.

Hi Pam,
He initially signed for 12 years.
Would servicemen during the war volunteer to continue serving while receiving their pension until the end of the war?
Hi,
He was born in 1900,
He held the rating of Able Seaman with sub-ratings of Seaman Gunner and Quarters Orderly before they changed to Quarters Rating 3rd Class.
My curiosity was raised from the fact there were no longer any records showing his time on any ships after the one line of him listed as AB(6) Pens., except a character and efficiency log from December 1941.
The first mention of any discharge is the Released in Class A dated 1945.
Thanks
