Default William LYDEN, Glasgow, b c1888 - Military

This man joined the army as MARLIN and so is "mis-filed" in the WW1 Service Records (WO 363).

Joined the Scottish Rifles on 23 June 1908, declaring age 17y 11m.(He states that he told the Army Recruiter that he preferred the name MARLIN and was told that he could call himself anything he wanted.)
The Birth Year of 1888 may well be wrong - he married in 1907.
    Wife: Catherine RANKIN
    Children: Robert 1910 & Catherine Eliza 1914.
Home address: Perth Street, Anderston, Glasgow.

Working as a Trimmer with the Donaldson Line of Steamers (Glasgow-Montreal/Quebec) when war was declared, he rejoined in September 1914, with the ASC.

In 1922 he applied for replacement papers, declaring his age as 32.

Regt Nos: 6777 Scottish Rifles; 280479 ASC.

Searching SP for WL b 1880-1890 only gave 1 candidate: b. 1885 Anderston.

Spelling variant "Leyden" used in 1901 family census. Can't find William in the 1901.
