    Default George Samuel O'Donnell 1821

I am trying to track the ancestors of George Samuel O'Donnell (my GG grandfather)--he was born in Dublin in 1821 and was subsequently employed by the British Indian Army. I would welcome any suggestions of how to search for him.

Yes, the marriage is correct to Matilda Hunt (last name from a previous marriage--her original maiden name was Boodrie). I think the birth date of 1821 is relatively accurate but I do not know an exact date of birth (only of death). Thanks!

Irish Genealogy has a baptism with no image or dates other than 1822 at St Mary, Dublin of George O'Donnel s/o Thomas O'Donnel & Eliz Fitzsimons, so possibly the same one.

Thanks--this is at least something. It is possible George Samuel O'Donnell was born in late 1821 but not baptized until 1822. At least this record has parent's names. However, the spelling of the name has only one "L" although this is not necessarily reported accurately. It would have been nice to see a middle name of Samuel for more confirmation.

Although not on Irish Genealogy, the image is available here:

Its a Catholic baptism on 24 Feb 1822 and the sponsors/godparents are Bernard & Isabella MacCartney

Although his death notice says he was late of the Indian Telegraph Department, his marriage and at least one baptism put his occupation as overseer/Assistant Overseer of the Ganges Canal.

Wikipedia says that the project was sponsored by the British East India Company, so there may be something in their records perhaps.

Google Books has Proby T Cautley's 'Report on the Ganges Canal Works: from their commencement until the opening of the Canal in 1854' which, although not mentioning George, might be of interest to you. Also searching Ganges Canal in the British Library catalogue returns a lot of results, so its possible they too have some further information.

By 1854 he was Inspector, Electric Telegraph

That's unlikely if he was Catholic. Normal practice with Catholic baptisms was/is to baptise the child as soon as possible, normally within a day or two of the birth. It was feared that an unbaptised child that died would be left in limbo, though that's no longer the belief.

Very good point! I have no evidence that he was Catholic other than place of birth, of course.
