It's looking like Rachel's father, John, was still alive in 1851 which poses the question just who is Thomas Edwards with Emma and her grandmother, Mary Edwards, in 1861!

    1851
John Corns 67, labourer, Brewood Staffs
    Mary Corns 66, Seighford Staffs
William Corns 21, son, labourer, Penkridge

A possible death for John from FreeBMD
    Deaths Mar 1855
    Corns John Penkridge 6b 269

Parish record says age 73yrs, buried 31st Jan 1855 at Penkridge St Michael and All Angels

I was looking at this information last night and decided, although it seemed unlikely, that Mary and William Corns were possibly the same people as Mary and Thomas Edwards....This would suggest that something happened in the 1850s to cause them to change their names.
I had hoped that Thomas had assumed the name of his brother who might have died, but obviously not as you found Thomas alive and well in 1871.
I'll ponder further now it is morning!

    Hi Grisel,

That thought crossed my mind too and would fit with this marriage below if William Corns is AKA Thomas Edwards. It would mean though that although he's Thomas Edwards in 1861, he married as William Corns in 1870. Also Thomas and Mary Edwards had moved to Cheshire by 1861, and William Corns married in Stafford. Oh dear it's very confusing. Need to check if William can be found on any census after 1851.

It's not a straightforward search, from memory I don't think I found William Corns in 1861.

This is the only marriage I've found for a Lydia Broomer
Dec 27th 1870 St Mary Stafford.
William Corns, 40, bachelor, labourer, address Broad Eye, father John Corns a labourer
Lydia Broomer, 46, spinster, add. Broad Eye, father John Broomer an architect.

Need to check if William can be found on any census after 1851.
I cannot find him after 1851, nor have I found a suitable death.

Aug 13th 1849, Forebridge Parish of Castle Church
Daniel Duckis, engine driver, father Thomas Duckis a labourer
Rachael Cornes, dressmaker, father John Cornes a labourer.
Witnesses - Thomas Corns and Margaret Corns.
Probably the Thomas and Margaret mentioned at #10.

I have found a record on the criminal register in 1852 for a William Corns - could be the answer to the name change... thats if it is him...

    "Feloniously receiving stolen goods"

    Name: William Corns
Date of Trial: 12 Mar 1850
    Trial Year: 1850
    Location of Trial: Staffordshire, England
    Sentence: Acquittal
