during my research, on the 1891 census a husband & wife who were in their 80's show the Occupation as "In Receipt of Parish Pay"
Was this some form of welfare? I do not recall ever coming across the term before.

Were they in England?
I suspect that this is something to do with the Poor Law, but may be wrong - I'm surer about goings on in Scotland.

They were resident in Somerset
