    Default Parish Pay

during my research, on the 1891 census a husband & wife who were in their 80's show the Occupation as "In Receipt of Parish Pay"

Was this some form of welfare? I do not recall ever coming across the term before.

    Were they in England?

I suspect that this is something to do with the Poor Law, but may be wrong - I'm surer about goings on in Scotland.

Hi Vagabond, yes it was a kind of welfare payment.

This link goes someway to explain it.
