Stillborn registers.

Horrible topic I know but would a still born be registered as a birth? I've noticed alot of occasions where a child is born and dies in the same year.. I wondered if these were stillborns or just babies that didn't live very long? It's quite sad how frequently it happens.. Im sure you've all found the same.

Stillbirths were not registered until 1927, when they began to be registered in the same way as a normal birth. Not sure if they are held in a actual separate register, but they are not included in the published GRO Index.

Only parents, or siblings of the baby if the parents are deceased, can apply for a copy of the registration.

Strictly speaking, even if a child lived for only a minute there should be a birth and a death certificate.

The records you have noticed are of infants who have died after birth not stillborns.
There are about 30,000 stillbirths a year in England which equates to about 1 in every 200 births. Around 600 could be saved if hospitals followed NHS Guidelines.

Stillbirths are recorded in a separate Stillbirth Register, stillbirths may also be recorded in burial registers from at least 1551 to the present day.

Sorry this is not correct any person can apply for a copy of any entry in the Stillbirth Register, however the Registrar General (in reality his/her staff) looks at the request and decides whether to allow the request or refuse it.
The parents of the stillborn are automatically given the right to receive a certificate of the stillbirth, this also applies to siblings if the parents are deceased.

Thank you Guy. You saved me having to write all that. It's one of the few things I know about because my aunt had a stillborn child and my cousin applied for the certificate to make the family tree complete

Thank you for that.. So basically I can assume that the babies I've found were alive when they were born.. Just didnt live for very long after birth.
My nan had a stillbirth before my dad was born and I was wondering why I couldn't find a birth record for him.. I imagine he will be recorded in the still birth register.
