I was looking through a page of the 1901 census and noticed on a particular page on Lewis Williams aged 60 who appears to be described as a "superanuated police officer, compulsory officer & Est Agent".
Any ideas what one was?
He's no relation, -I'm just curious.

Hi Megan,
I don't know, but...............
The only explanation I can think of is: as he's superannuated therefore drawing a police pension he had reached the age, or length of service when he had to take compulsory retirement.Alma

I believe that he had three "jobs"; a retired police officer, a Compulsory Officer, aka School Board Man, or Whipper In ( made sure that the pupils attended school) and Estate Agent.

Seems to be a bit more than the "Whipper in" - eg.

Well done everyone. I knew there would be some members with factual knowledge as opposed to my best guess.
