    Default Simon MAX m Kitty SUNDERLAND 1906 Bradford

    As this man served as SAMUEL MARKS, he is "mis-filed" in the WW1 Service Records (WO 363).
    Born in Russia, and unable to read/write English, it is possible that Samuel MARKS is his real name - perhaps the Bradford registrar misheard in 1906? (Wife Kitty is "Kate" in the Record)

    Marriage: 27 March 1906, Bradford (registered Q1 1906), names as above.
    Trade: Tailor
    Home address: Glasgow

    Called up (Samuel MARKS) in July 1918 - declared age 33y, born Russia. 1885? An extract from his Special Enlistment papers (being Russian he was an alien) gives DoB 20 July 1889.
    Served as Pte 556869 Labour. Discharged 1919.

    Parents: Jacob & Sarah (nee COHEN);
    Wife: Kate SUNDERLAND? (All the GRO refs are SUNDERLAND, but the Record looks more like SAUNDERLAND - born Russia, so an anglicised name?);
    Children (all except Noah born Bradford, names not included in Record (ie from GRO) are starred):
    Michael* Myer 1906; Solomon 1908; Heron* Cecil 1910; Harry Morris* 1912; Matthew (registered as Matthias*) 1914; Noah (b Glasgow) 1916/1917.

    There's no Samuel Marks of that age in the 1911 for Glasgow (nearest is 32 in 1911).
    Only Simon Marks is 11 at time of census.
    No Simon or Samuel Max.

    There's a Samuel Marks, son of Nathan & Hannah, in London but he's not married. Also a Simon M, also not married.
    No Samuel or Simon Max.

    He was possibly in BRADFORD in 1911 - that's where he married in 1906, and where the first 5 surviving children were born 1906-1914. The sixth, Noah, was born in Glasgow 1916/1917 (difficult to read) so I assume they moved north of the border between 1914 & 1917.

    The Scotlands People index has a couple of possible Samuel Marks deaths (in 1923 aged 38 in Bellshill and in 1925 aged 43 in Cathcart (Lanark).
    There's one post-WW2 (see below) - Samuel Marks aged 71 in 1956, Old or West Kilpatrick. I'm low on SP credits, sadly.
    No Simon Marks or Max, or Samuel Max (with time frame not specified).

    1879018 Sapper Noah Marks of 54 Coy Royal Engineers died 4 Jul 1942. He was the son of Samuel & Kitty Marks of Glasgow. CWGC do not describe Samuel as "late" which they generally do if necessary. Moreover, the inscription includes "IN SACRED MEMORY OF OUR DEAR SON AND BROTHER. SADLY MISSED BY MUM, DAD & FAMILY", so Samuel must have outlived his son. Noah's buried at Ranchi War Cemetery, India.

    None of the other children are listed on CWGC.

    There is a very important Scottish Jewry data base which has been developed over the past 5 or more years. Details of this data base can be seen online at Avotaynu Online A family tree of Scottish Jewry:Records retrieval stage completed. The data base is held at the Scottish Jewish Archives (SJAC). There is a computer data base of 40000 Scottish Jews including a wide range of sources of records including birth, marriage, death, synagogue and other records.
    See also the Glasgow Hebrew Burial Society online data base which has 11000 grave/burial records. This data base can be searched using first name and surname.

    There are several Max surnames on the JewishGen UK Data base including those in Leeds and London.

    It may prove helpful if this above information was put as a 'sticky' probably on the Jewish Roots forum because I suspect that other researchers may be unaware of the data bases.
