    Default CHELMINSKI, Morris 1892-1916 - WW1

This man enlisted under his "adopted name", Murray MARKS, and so is "mis-filed" in the WW1 Service Records (WO 363).

As Murray MARKS, Morris CHELMINSKI joined the Royal Scots Fusiliers in December 1915, declared age 23y 7m. Served as Pte 23043, and was reported as "Missing presumed died" on 30 July 1916.

    Born London 1892 (registered Q2).
    Family address in 1915: Glasgow.
Parents: Marks & Minnie CHALMINSKY - they appear to have kept the surname.
Siblings appear to have changed to MARKS:
    Brothers: Peter (c1890), Joseph (c1899) & Myer/Mayer? (c1902).
    Sisters: Lottie (c1895), Esther (c1897) & Rachel (c1906).

CWGC has an entry for 23043 Pte Murray Marks of the 2nd Bn. Royal Scots Fusiliers, age 24, d. 30 Jul 1916.
Son of M. and Minnie Marks of 162 Maryhill Rd, Glasgow. Thiepval memorial.

No Chelminski/y in the 1901 or 1911 for Glasgow or Scotland-wide.
27 hits in the 1901 for Glasgow for Marks, none for Marks and/or Minnie.
152 hits in the 1911 for Glasgow for Marks (on SP so index-only), no Minnie, Murray. Is a Murray Marks.
No hits for Chelminski/y in the whole of Scotland. If they retained the name, heaven knows what on earth the enumerator made of it...

Only 2 Chelminski/y births for Scotland - Christina, 1941, Malgorzataj 1944 Lanark, no marriages, no deaths.

Maybe Philip's Marks database will help.
