Hi Geneology Friends!
Im researching my GGG Grandfather, William Mackay.
Not sure of where he was born,(abt.1786) but he was married in Barbados (1822), and died in Swansea, Wales (1846).
What I was hoping for some help with was I have information that he was in the armed forces , as in 1813 he was promoted to the position of Assistant Commissary-General to the forces.
But as to this, I cannot find any official records with this particular rank ... as I dont know how he started out / where ... could this position be known as anything else ?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated !
Kindest Regards

Hi Elise and welcome to the Forum. This https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commissariat#19th_century gives an overall picture, which may mean that the Army is not the place to look.
The UK National Archives has quite a catalogue about the roles of Commissary General and Assistant Commissary General.
Hope that helps

You can follow part of his career by looking in The London Gazette. Search their archives using "Assistant Commissary-General mackay" between say 1800 to 1828.
