The marriage is registered in Sunderland as being 10 Sep 1862 between Jules Mason and Sarah Lotinga and the reference is M2JEWS/13

I know a reference C0... is Church of England, M can be Registry office, A can be methodists etc - and various following numbers give more detail. I've not come across M.JEWS before but I'm guessing it means it was a Jewish marriage which would tie in with being married at Queens Hotel possibly.
MS will be the register no. and 13 will be the entry in that register.

    Mikkel
The Mason and Lotinga are established Jewish families. Sue quite rightly moved your threads to this forum. There is a lot of data on the Lotinga and I am happy to post if required. As a help and to point you in the right direction see JewishGen UK Data base ( free subscription)- you will find under LOTINGA under a range of data bases including the Petra Laidlaw 1851 Anglo Jewry Data Base which has Asser Moses Lotinga b 1805 Groningen Holland with his parents Mozes Noachs Levi Lotinga and Sara Kalmer Salomons.
This site is a very important resource and you can see records of Lotinga including burials.
You will also find Lotinga records on Cemetery Scribes data base.
The Avotaynu records include Lotinga last name.

On a separate point regarding where Jews were married I enclose the following extract..' Jewish marriages certainly could be soleminised in synagogues but also in any other place if so desired by the participants.A tradition of using a private house (frequently that of the bride) or public places such as taverns, coffee houses and the like, is still popular with the Jewish Community'.

My Ancestors were Jewish. Dr Anthony Joseph Society of Genealogists Enterprises Ltd 3rd Ed 2002

Many of my own lines were married in hotels or private houses.
