Hello,
I've been trying to help finding out more about the family of my English uncle, but I'd like to ask if someone here who has more experience with British genealogical researchs can help me.
I have found the will of Leonard Stanley Taylor who died in Calcutta in 1930 and that's surely the right person.
His wife at the time of death was Beryl Hope Taylor. So I've found a 1928 marriage in Bengal between a Leonard Taylor of Isaac and a Beryl Hope Blackburn, born supposedly around 1894 to William Blackburn. Actually I have found a Beryl Hope Blackburn born in Calcutta in 1892...
Leonard Stanley had 2 sons (born in 1919 and 1922). I'm not sure if Beryl Hope was the mother but in 1925 she was already with them. Also in the family they say that the mother of the 2 sons was born around 1900 and they also say she was a Danish dancer with the surname Jensen.
We know for sure that Leonard Stanley had at least a previous marriage before and the Doris Norah Taylor named on the will had a different mother. I think that this first family can be found on the 1911 census in Blackpool. Leonard was born in Pendleton (Lancashire) to Isaac Taylor.
Additional confusing elements are another possibly related marriage in India between a Leonard Taylor of Isaac and a Eileen Gertrude Robson (1914).
The only way to know the name of the mother of the 2 sons is to request a birth certificate right? Why I can't find records about the divorces? Did some civil records in India got destroyed or something?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

I can't see any birth for her in the UK so the Calcutta 1892 one looks very possible.

The children on the 1911 census have a MMN of Blackwell on their birth registrations.
Marraige reg
Edith Alice Blackwell
Registration Year: 1905
Reg Quarter: Jul-Aug-Sep
Reg district: Warrington
Volume: 8c
Page: 330
On the same page is Leonard Taylor.
Ancestry have a divorce record for these 2 people Petitioned in 1912. It does have a reference to India.
Do you know the names of the 2 sons born 1919 & 1922?

Just seen Pamela's great find so now possible two previous marriages.
The names of the sons are on a tree on ancestry but I can't see deaths for them as yet so can't post their details.

Thank you both very much for these precious details!
Yes, I think that the Leonard in the 1914 marriage with Eileen Gertrude Robson is the right person. I didn't find any other info about her though.
Still trying to understand where does that story about the Danish mother come from. Could it be Eileen Gertrude maybe?

The danish mother family story may or may not be true or it could be about someone earlier than this. Family stories can and did get mixed up/made up/exaggerated etc.

Ok so this is Leonard in the 1911 census with wife Edith Alice nee Blackwell
Belsfield Promenade South Shore Blackpool
Leonard Taylor 26
Edith Alice Taylor 26
Doris Norah Taylor 2
Leonard Kenneth Taylor 9 months
It was Leonard who petitioned for divorce from Edith due to her adultery and her first child, a son, was not the child of Leonard.
So we have marriages
1. 1905 to Edith Alice Blackwell in Warrington Lancashire registration district. Dissolved 1913. Leonard got custody of the two children who are with them on the 1911 census. Edith returned to England living near Warrington.
2. 1914 Eileen Gertrude Robson In Calcutta.

The divorce decree has pages of interesting information and copy of their marriage certificate which says Isaac, Leonard's father was deceased at the time of the marriage and was a cotton manufacturer.Sometimes paranoia is just having all the facts.

Thank you very much Christanel! I find this story very intriguing. We also know that Beryl Hope married McKean Edward Tatchell in 1937 and died in Penzance in 1990, but her year of birth there seems to be 1900.
Unfortunately I haven't got a full Ancestry subscription. Is there any way you could send me the divorce decree image?

I can see Mckean Edwards first marriage in Romford Essex 1929 but not a second marriage in 1937. Meither can I find them on the 1939 UK register. Where did they marry?
His birth reg says he was born 1903 in the Romford essex registration district
How about this? Looks like Beryl and Edward went to the US at some stage.
