Thanks.
I just hadn't even considered John because of the long scrawl and yet it is so obvious.
I concur with Silas - just what is annoying is that there are NO records of a Silas COOPER anywhere in England, never mind Derbyshire, 40 years each side of 1728 so where the hell did he spring up from to sign a family Will!
Thanks again,
Mitch

In the first image, the dots after the mystery name could be a colon indicating abbreviation, so it might be worth also looking for similar names such as Silvanus, Silvester (and Syl- variants) etc.

There is a single Silvanus COOPER buried in Derbyshire in 1701 the only evidence of anything like that from 1646-1806 on Findmypast and UK wide is not much more helpful! Local parish registers around Wirksworth contain only Samuel as a first male name beginning with an 'S for COOPER. A right mystery!

It couldn't possibly be Titus, could it?
It would mean the first letter starting with the stem, looping round clockwise to cross over the top, then a flourish to finish. 'ilas' and 'itus' could easily be confused, if the 't' wasn't crossed.
