I have found my great-grandfather's military record but nothing prior to that. Would the Army have required a birth certificate at the time of joining in 1870. The Regiment was 11th Hussars and he joined up in Brighton.
Many thanks

Give us his details and we'll see what we can do for you.

Thank you for your response.
His name is William Frost and he joined the 11th Hussars in Brighton on 15th June 1870. The record I have shows number 1080 - but I don't know what it refers to.
The record shows that he was born in Cardiff and was 22years old at the time of joining, which suggests a date of birth as June 1848. Subsequent records show his age as inconsistent with this and range from year of birth 1848 to 1852. Searches of birth records for Wales during these years are coming up with nothing useful and I was hoping that the Army would have required a birth certificate. Any suggestions you have will be most gratefully received.
Thanks again.

Is there a father's name on his marriage certificate?

Hello Pat370, and welcome to Brit-Gen
Do you know if William also used the name John? Could he have been William John, or John William?
I ask as there's an 1891 census record which seems to fit but this chap is entered as John Frost. I note on his service records his wife is named Arabella.
1891, Northgate, Kent, Cavalry Depot. Class: RG12; Piece: 708; Folio: 133; Page: 1

Alice Frost 8, Harwich Essex

Rhoda Frost 4, Ireland
Edith Frost 2, Ireland

Working from the GRO index, it appears that he married as William Algernon FROST.
Pat must surely have a copy of the marriage cert.

This is him! And those are indeed his children. I haven't seen anything else with the name "John" included, though on his marriage certificate he calls himself William Algernon.

Thanks again for your reply. I have his marriage certificate and he calls himself William Algernon Frost. He married on Nov 4th 1979 in East Donyland, Essex and his father is also William, apparently a merchant.
I'm also replying to another thread - are all these visible to everyone?
