According to the 1830 Pigot's Directory, Thomas Robinson was a 'clog pattern last and boot tree maker' at 69 Byrom Street. Recently one of the list members wrote that '1843 Gores' lists him as a shoemaker at 99 St Andrews Street.
Am I correct in thinking he would have done an apprenticeship? If so, are there extant records? Also, is it likely a clogmaker would become a shoemaker (perhaps these are two different people)? I do not have any information on him apart from the name of his son, Joseph (b. 1821) who was born a Catholic.
Thanks in advance. Lexia

It's quite possible that he was apprenticed. However, apprenticeship indentures were private contracts between individuals and as such their survival is patchy. Collections do exist in record offices and the number held varies from one centre to another. I'd recomment that you look at the web-sites of the relevant record offices and see if they give a hint as to local collections, or contact the offices via e-mail.
Liverpool and Merseyseide Record Office is probably the first place to try

Also look at Lancashire Record Office.

I had a look at the Liverpool Gore's Directories. Thomas Robinson, last maker, is there from 1811 to 1834. He is not there in the 1837 edition & I think you said in another posting that he had emigrated by then. He certainly moved about a bit:
1803 & 1807 - not listed
1811 - 15 Oxford St
1813 - not listed
1816 - 8 Cherry Lane
1818 - 23 Cherry Lane
1821 & 1823 - 27 Cherry Lane
1825 - 73 Byrom St
1827 - not listed
1829 - 8 Great Richmond Pl. Rose Hill; shop - 46 Byrom St
1832 - ditto; shop 78 Byrom St
1834 - ditto; shop 118 Whitechapel
1837 onwards - not listed
Thomas Robinson, shoemaker is listed in 1839 & 1841 at 103 St Andrew St, & in 1843 at 99 St Andrew St.
Henry Robinson, pattern maker & shop is at 156 Dale St in 1803 & 1807.
Thomas Robinson, shoemaker is at 27 Tythebarn St in 1796 & 26 Pall Mall in 1790.Last edited by Wirral; 20-10-2005 at 10:07 PM. Reason: typo
