Hi Lizzie, I've now taken another look at the register. It looks like PACE or LACE to me, but who knows! These old registers have worn print, not always easy to read. The record for Wm, son of Sarah Thirnby does, I think say base. I don't see the other record you refer to, but looking over the page there's another WM base son of ................
Whether or not it says Pace, Lace or base, Margaret seems to have been born illegitimately as no father mentioned on the register entry.
