Have been trying to find William McKie and his wife Grace Coultron on 1851 without success. However have just found an entry on Family Search with the name mispelled as McKae. Have tried putting that spelling into Scotlands People and Ancestry but still nothing. Any suggestions please?
Thanks Ed

Its all down to how different people transcribe handwriting.
Rather than using the spelling, now that you have found the entry on one site, if you want to find it on others use the reference numbers i.e. piece number, page number and folio number.

I'm afraid that I can't check your SP search without more information - age, place, etc.
SP is very literal unless you tell it different under "search options" - eg if you don't tell it to treat Mac/Mc as the same, it won't.

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately, Family search does not give any reference numbers. I have driven myself mad trying all the combination s of spelling on ancestry and Scotland's people without success. FMP finds the entry with the same spelling as FS but my subscription has expired and I get fed up with paying for credits which expire before I have used them.

Leslie, I think I have tried every combination that there is. I have lived with the problem of the spelling of my surname all my life. Sometimes I dread visiting Scotland as I always meet someone who wants me to either spell it or pronounce it differently.

FreeCEN to the rescue. (Quite a few Scottish counties have 100% transcription for 1851 census.)
https://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Make sure you select the right year.
Piece: SCT1851/578 Folio: 0 Page: 11 Schedule: 25
Living Midton Road, The Knowe, Ayr
William transcribed as McKeg, age 79
Grace transcribed as Coultson/McKeg, age 77
The transcriber has noted 'surname/second name uncertain' with regard to McKeg.

Ancestry have them transcribed as William McKage and Grace Couttrona Mckage.
ADDED: ScotlandsPeople list them as William and Grace McKay.

Went down that road Peter but have no credits left on FMP so could not get the details without buying more, most of which I lose. I have credits on Scotlands People so wanted the image from there.
