Note that in 1841 census only the ages of anyone 15 and over were to be marked down to the nearest 5. Some enumerators did it others didn't. This one did.

So we now have William's parents names but to be absolutely certain of this the marriage certificate should be purchased.

ps I have moved this thread to the Devonshire forum as I have turned it into a research project
Thank you for all your help! Given the proximity of Stoke Damerel to Devonport, certainly seems like a match with the "Devonport, Devon" birthplace that William gave on the censuses. If I found it, would William's death record list parents (??).

    Thanks for the clarification, Peter!

Unfortunately, no. Here is an explanation of what you can expect to see on a death certificate:

    https://www.
    gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/most_customers_want_to_know.asp#CertificateInforma tion

In case you haven't yet found it, this looks like William's death record:

HAMILTON William C 1917 Blean S Qtr Vol 02A Page 986, age at death 76.

Blean was the registration district covering Herne Bay.

Thanks for your help, Peter. I found this record, too -- location makes sense, as William's youngest married in Blean in 1919.
