The Denis in the 1861 Census is aged "0" - which would fit with the Mar 1861 birth registration where the mother's maiden name was Lyons.
"dyfal donc a dyr y garreg"

In my initial post I gave you the census reference. It's RG09 Piece No 4050 Folio 73 Page 61.
You can search FindMyPast (FMP) by reference - not sure about Ancestry.

FMP have transcribed surname as Sillivan

Thanks for the info, what a shame he died young. Do you think these are my relatives, I wander if this is why I've nevr found them because I can't find that census record you are talking about on ancestry at all.
    Thanks again

After searching I still can't find that census extract being mentioned on the thread on ancestry.com. just my luck that it's going to be the correct one.

First, a belated but nonetheless a very warm welcome to Brit-gen.

    The 1861 Census reads -
John Sullivan, head, 20, Labourer in Iron Works, born Ireland
Catherine Sullivan, wife, 20, born Ireland
Denis Sullivan, son, 0, born Merthyr
Daniel Sullivan, brother, 12, born Ireland
Address 2 Shepherd's Row, Merthyr Tydfil

FMP have transcribed as "Sillivan" but original looks like Sullivan - cannot speak for A*yi
"dyfal donc a dyr y garreg"
