    Default Grantham street names

I have started a project to try and map where my ancestors were located in each census. I have 2 Grantham addresses from 1841 that I am having trouble locating: Russell Court and Granby Yard

Anyone have a clue as to where they might be?

My Ancestry subscription has run out so I can't look at the census pages and see which roads were nearby. I have also looked at the NA street indexes but Grantham doesn't appear to be on there. Old maps of Grantham haven't been forthcoming either.

    Details are as follows:

MINTA family living in Russell Court

Class: HO107; Piece: 625; Book: 2; Civil Parish: Grantham; County: Lincolnshire; Enumeration District: 4; Folio: 34; Page: 15

BRIGGS family living in Granby Yard

Class: HO107; Piece: 625; Book: 2; Civil Parish: Grantham; County: Lincolnshire; Enumeration District: 4; Folio: 41; Page: 28

    Cheers

Russell Court appears to follow addresses in Westgate; afterwards there are a couple more in Westgate, then it goes into Wilkins Place.

Granby Yard has Market Place on both sides, and the immediately preceding property is an inn. (Was there ever a Marquis of Granby there? It seems quite possible - apparently he was the local MP, as well as reputedly setting up retired soldiers from his regiment as innkeepers, hence the number of pubs that bear his name.)

Unfortunately I haven't managed to spot either address on a map.

    Neither have I.

I think that part of Grantham has been extensively redeveloped and the two locations no longer exist.

You could try Grantham Library (in part of the new development!) which might well have some old maps of the town.

There's a pub called the Granby Head, 6 Market Place -

The Gentleman's Magazine mentions the "... Granby Head Inn, in the Market Place ..." as early as 1796. From the 1820s I can only see Granby Inn, Market Place, the "Head" having apparently been dropped? Was it subsequently restored?

The URL above is correct but is returning an error when clicked - odd.

Is The Granby Head now the Eden Wine Bar?
