Just found a marriage for Daniel Dixon widower and Miriam 12 Feb 1778, by Special Licence. The page is from Phillimore's and I then noticed that of the 25 marriages on the page, only 3 are not by licence or special licence. Can anyone tell me why so many marriages there were by licence please?

Thank you both. I think Elsinore is correct and it is spinster not 'special' licence. Still hoping for an answer to the number of licences!

If Daniel Dixon married Miriam Smith the licence is on line at FMP, the record set is: Sarum Marriage Licence Bonds
Miriam is desc as sp = spinster
