The Isle of Wight is included in UK records.
familysearch.org has this guide to researching in the Isle of Wight
https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en...land_Genealogy
There is also the Isle of Wight Family History Society

Not a lover of trees on ancestry however several have a birth/ baptism date of 2 June 1831 IoW
Here is your possible link
1841 Census
HO107; Piece: 1461; Book: 9; Civil Parish: St Helier; County: Jersey; Enumeration District: 11; Folio: 31; Page: 11; Line: 15;
Richard Smith 35 Fisherman
Mary Smith 30
Richard Butt 9
Mary Smith 5
Richard Smith 3
Checking the CI on line marriages there is a
Richard Hartley Smith of Gillingham Kent married to a MArie Cabot on 21 August 1834
Checking out RHSmith produces this baptism
Name: Richard Hartley Smith
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 3 Aug 1805
Birth Place: Gillingham, Kent, England
Baptism Date: 5 Jan 1806
Baptism Place: Gillingham, Kent, England
Father: Robert Groombridge Smith
Mother: Mary
This to me confirms that the 1841 census for RGBUTT is the correct one.
Another child of RHS & Mary Cabot
Name: Robert Groombridge Smith
Birth Date: 11 Mar 1844
Baptism Date: 30 May 1846
Baptism Place: St Helier, Jersey
Father: Richard Hartley Smith ( Sailor)
Mother: Mary Cabot
Died 4 June 1846 Typhoid Fever
There is a marriage in Saint Werburgh Hoo Kent
20 Sept 1802
Robert Groombridge Smith to Mary Scales Spencer
Suggest you go to familysearch enter surname Smith baptisms search period 1802 - 1830 enter father's name Robert Groombridge Smith of Kent
Do the same for marriages to see if you can find Mr Butt who married female Smith d/o RGS
A Richard Hartley Smith died in NSW in 1858?
Please come back to us with your findings
Away to do lunch!!

A possible scenario using information of births and marriages at #3 and 5, and what Geneius found on a family tree (though where IOW comes into it I don't know, unless R. Butt was born there and his parents were from Jersey, father a seaman! whatever he seems to have been baptised in Jersey). Another point in question is Richard Butts middle name of Groombridge??? Though he could have taken it from his step father as it is a name in his [step father] family. Butt seems to be a surname found more in IOW than Jersey, perhaps Richard's father, also a Richard was born there.
Richard Butt age 9 on 1841 census in Jersey with a Richard and Mary Smith and their children. Richard Hartly-Smith married Marie Cabot 21st Aug 1834, Grouville, Jersey. Mary Cabot (widow of John Bertram) married Richard Butt 19th May 1831, a Richard Butt was buried 14th June 1832 at Grouville, Jersey, (parents of Richard Butt born approx 1832) Marie Cabot married Jean Bertram 18th Nov 1826 Grouville, (there are a few possible burials in Grouville for Jean Bertram) Appears Mary/Marie Cabot was married three times.
Baptisms of the children on 1841 census, all have mother's maiden name Cabot.
Richard James Butt, 23rd June 1834, Grouville, father Richard, mother Marie Cabot (maiden name)
Richard James Smith, 29th April 1838, Grouville, father Richard Harteley, mother Mary Cabot
Mary Julia Hartley-Smith, 17th May 1835, Grouville, father Richard, mother Mary Cabot
Richard Hartley-Smith born 3rd Aug Gillingham Kent, father Robert Groombridge Smith, mother Mary.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Timeline for Mary/Marie Cabot.
Marie/Mary Cabot married Jean Bertram 18th Nov 1826, Grouville
Jean Bertram died abt. 1830
I haven't found any children born to Marie/Jean.
Mary/Marie Cabot married Richard Butt 19th May 1831, Grouville
Son Richard James Butt baptised 23rd Jun 1834 (born 1832; age 9 in 1841)
Richard Butt senior was buried 14th June 1832, Grouville
Mary/Marie Cabot married Richard Hartley-Smith 21st Aug 1834
Dau Mary Julia Hartley-Smith, bap. 17th May 1835 Grouville
Son, Richard James Smith, bap. 29th Apr 1838, GrouvilleLast edited by almach; 07-04-2018 at 12:26 AM. Reason: Added extra info

NAME: Richard Butt
BAPTISM: 5 May 1805 - St. Helens, Hampshire, England
His death is likely to be 1832
Mary / Marie Cabot appears to have married J Bertram /R Butt/ RHSmith
There are so many children of this BUTT family maybe you need to draw up a family tree!

Hi all
I too have a Butt ancestor who landed in NZ (William Butt) & I have the following info.
Richard Hartley Smith & Marie Cabot also had the following children all christened St Hellier, Jersey
Sarah Ann Smith C1840. died May 1841, St Hellier
William Henry Smith 1842
Robert Groombridge Smith 1844
Rosina Adelaide Smith 1848
The Richard Hartley Smith who died 1858 in Australia was only 20 years old so not the right person

An after thought:
As Richard BUTT is in the 1841 household with RH Smith & Mary Cabot, he could be the son of Mary Cabot, question is who is the father?
The other scenario is Richard Butt snr was married to an other is it his son Mary Cabot being the step mother
