This new thread links the Australian descendants of Carlos Miguel Hauer SIMMONDS 1849 and Ellen Maria LEWIS 1851-1915 to the Simon aka Simmons aka Simmonds Jewish family from Germany. The thread should also be read in conjunction with earlier threads on the Hauer/Simmonds and related Jacobs lines.

The purpose of this new thread is to provide both known and new data on the Australian Simmonds and related families who they married into.

As an initial summary, Carlos Miguel Hauer Simmonds was the son of Kalman aka Carl Hauer Simmonds 1824-1895 and Micaela Codina. Carl's parents were Sander aka Alexander Hauer 1777-1865 and Roschen Phillip 1782-1836. The roots are German Jews.
My Hauer Simmonds and Jacobs distant cousins hold a wide range of original data on the lines including family trees,diary entries,portraits, photographs and other family records.

The lines settled in the UK, South America and the West Indies and some returned to Hamburg in the latter part of the 19th Century. I have posted on these lines.Some retained their Jewish Roots and religion while others including Carlos were Roman Catholics.

The children of Carlos and Ellen were:

The Australian Newspaper Archives contained a wide range of articles on Carlos and some of his children.

Death of a well known Catholic
"The late Carlos H Simmonds whose death took place at the residence of his daughter Mrs G J Pasfield at Croydon Thursday last week.
The deceased gentleman was born at Santa Marta, Columbia and educated in Germany,France,Switzerland and England. He was for atime attached to the business of H T Stewart and Co in New York. He came to Australia over fifty years ago and after spending some fourteen months in South Australia he came to Sydney, where he established a business asa labor, insurance and general agent. He spoke several languages fluently...He was appointed Consul for Columbia in 1890 ...He fulfilled his duties up to the time of his death. He was 78 years of age.. Funeral at Rookwood...

"Tragedy followed tragedy in the suicide on April 27 over his wife's grave in Rookwood Cemetery (NSW) of Edward Stanland, a young returned soldier, who took strychnine. He said he could not bear to be parted from his wife who died last February. His wife's death was also a tragedy. Married only last November she underwent a minor operation in February. The operation was apparently successful, but a clot of blood developed and she died.. Stanland met his wife two and a half years ago. She was the daughter of Mr Carlos Simmonds..."

"The remains of Edward Stanland who committed suicide on his wife's grave at Rookwood on Sunday were buried in the same cemetery half a mile apart from his wife's last resting place. They could not share the a communal grave because the remains of Mrs Stanland lie in her family lot which is full. There were only three mourners at the Roman Catholic plot.."

My Simmonds distant cousins have noted that Leo Bede Simmonds married Helen May Brady. However, Australia Electoral Rolls show that Leo was later living at the same address as a Gwendoline Mildred surname as yet not confirmed.

Hello,

I came across your post after searching up "Karl Hauer Philips Simmonds". I have been doing some family research and turns out that Karl Hauer Philips Simmonds is my great grand-mothers grand father. Would be interested to know if there's any more information on the Simmonds Codinne names. My great grand mothers name at birth was Antonia Magri Simmonds her mother was Renata Simmonds Codinne which is the daughter of Karl Hauer Philips Simmonds and Micaela Codinne.

Some additional background this part of my family that leads to Simmonds Codinne is from Santa Marta Colombia.
