If he died in the war, would I have to try to find it in the forces records? I HAVE found details of a memorial to previous masters and pupils who died in WW1 on a Penrith school (no longer there) that listed a James Kitchen, previously a pupil who perished in the war. Is there any way of confirming it’s the right James Kitchen

Emily left £193 16s 11d Probate was granted to William Heird Johnstone a retired local government officer. A probate allows the person named to administer the estate,, this one doesn't state there is a Will....however

ff you look at the last entry on the page Henry Kitchen you will note that there is a Will same applies to Naomi Kitch bottom left hand side!

    Name: James Kitchen
    Age: 23
    Birth Date: abt 1895
    Death Date: 22 Mar 1918
    Cemetery: Pozieres Memorial
    Burial Country: France
    Father: James Kitchen
    Mother: Emily Kitchen
Regiment: 18th Hussars (Queen Mary's Own)
    Regimental Number: 17661
    Region or Memorial: France

Wow, thank you so much. I have blinkers on when looking for something and miss what surrounds it. I looked on the CWWG site but could only find 11 Kitchen's of any first name who died in BOTH of the wars. Drove me mad! But duh - I was only looking in England. If it wasn't for this site, i'd still be at the same brick wall I was 10 years ago
