This information is inscribed on his grave marker in Louisiana.
There is some circumstantial evidence that he was born in Llansteffan, the son of George and Margaret (Lewis). He does not feature with their family in 1841.
I would welcome any help to put the record straight.

Thanks, Sandy.
If he did not emigrate until 1856, presumably he should have been recorded somewhere in 1851, hopefully with place of birth. Have had a quick look but can find nothing obvious.

The naturalisation date isn't when he arrived, just when he was naturalised, and unfortunately his naturalisation doesn't state when he arrived. There is a possible record of his immigration here, although its 1844:

Looks like he married in 1852

Many thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Your responses indicate both thoughtful and time consuming research.
Looking at my original post I now realise that I could have more explicit in expressing my objective. My prime interest is in George and Margaret (Lewis) Davies. A contributor on Roots Web World Connect names JLD as their son but offers no source in support of that assertion. There are, however, some circumstantial pointers.
The most obvious is the middle name, Lewis. Also JLD sits comfortably amongst their other known children all of whom, except the youngest, were born/baptised in Llansteffan. Additionally George and Margaret had a son, Benjamin George, their daughter Margaret had a son George Benjamin and JLD had a son Benjamin George.
What I am trying to establish is the parentage of JLD. If it can be shown that he is the son of George and Margaret than the information you have provided me with will be invaluable in tracing his life in America.

According to the Louisiana Biography & Obituary Index hosted by the New Orleans Public Library, an obituary was published in the Daily Picayune on 25 & 28 March 1897 - page 4 Column 7, although he is recorded as John LEWES Davies.
Copies can be ordered from the library, so perhaps this may give some more information?
