Welcome to the British Genealogy Forum, Annajenny. I'm afraid that I'm not a lot of use on the Irish side (I've escaped from the Scottish forums), but I'm sure that someone will be along in a while.
One thing that I have found useful among my scottish families (where all the brothers of a family might have caused their first sons after their father, giving outbreaks of babies with the same names in a small village) is to list all the children with birth years, and then sort them out according to whether or not siblings have names from the maternal (or, of course, paternal) sides - in one or two cases, even checking Aunts and Uncles. It's a lot of work!
