I've been studying entries in the Surrey, England, Land Tax Records, 1780-1832 database on Ancestry and have noted some entries that under 'Names of Occupiers" appear to say "inmates" following the name of the Proprietor, e.g.

Names of Proprietors: W Blasket

Names of Occupiers: Blasket's inmates

These are for St George Southwark in 1800.

What is meant by "inmates" in this context? Does it just mean there are so many people squeezed in that they can't name them all? I'd attach an image if I could, but for some reason, it keeps failing...
