What makes you think he was born in Arnold? Just because he married there does not necessarily mean that it was his place of birth.

Is he the James BRINDLEY who was in the Army? If so, FindmyPast have a couple of British Service records for him, neither of which is very informative although they both give physical descriptions. His first period of service was between 1803 and 1819, born 1785 in Harna, Nottingham, and the second between 1826 and 1830, born 1788 in Arnold, Nottingham. Can't give you full details because of FMP terms & conditions.
There is a short description about this James BRINDLEY on Ancestry by ahisco2 which states that his father was a Jonathan BRINDLEY of Market Drayton and that James died in Sydney in 1847. Does this fit in with what you know about your James BRINDLEY? If so, it might be worth contacting ahisco2 as they may have information that you do not have.

not sure what the Marriage Register says but so far no one I know of has located his parents names and his birth. His wife's family is known though.

Jan yes he had been in the Army, was a Chelsea Pensioner in Tasmania. Went to Sydney in 1846 and died there in 1847 in the Benevolent Asylum. He was also buried in Sydney (Old Sydney Cemetery/Devonshire St Cemetery which is now Central Station).

FreeReg has transcribed the baptisms for Arnold 1543-1901 and there are no entries for a James Brindley. It's possible that he wasn't baptised or was possibly nonconformist.
