    Default Bristol Workhouse Stapleton

My great grandfather died in 1899 in the Bristol Workhouse at Stapleton. The cause of death was given as Tubercular Phthisis (TB) and Acute Melancholia (severe depression). He was 53 and his wife had died three years previously. He was a Plasterer, in work all his life so would not have been destitute, at least I shouldn't think so.

I think the Workhouse at that time was also an Infirmary. Can someone confirm that please?

    Many thanks
    Mary

Not only did it have an infirmary, but (with The Ashes coming up) a one time Medical Officer was Henry G Grace, the father of W G Grace.

The workhouse contained an infirmary. By 1899, patients did not have to be paupers to be treated in a workhouse infirmary.
