    Default ISAAC CRAWCOUR 1815-1886-ESTHER CASHMORE

    This thread provides data on Isaac Crawcour 1815-1886 and Esther Cashmore 1816-1883. Isaac Crawcour was the son of David Crawcour and Amelia Barnes. My interest in Isaac is because he is a son of David Crawcour my 4 x great grandfather and I have been researching and posting on the Crawcour lines for some years. The publication of new records has also provided additional data on Isaac.
    Isaac moved from the UK to Australia. I will post data on Isaac and his children.
    At the time of his death on 23 October 1886 Isaac was living in Geelong Victoria. His will records: Isaac Crawcour Financier and his trustees Joseph Crawcour Geelong West Victoria financier;David Crawcour Geelong financier; Sydney Abraham Ballarat financier. Value of property £8118 14s. The Probate records show that Isaac had considerable property including bank accounts; monies lent on a range of mortgages and shares.
    In his will, Isaac left bequests to - his eldest son Joseph Crawcour including an oil painting of himself and his late wife Esther;granddaughter Esther Lawrence (daughter of Philip Lawrence of Sydney NSW) £200 to be invested until the age of 21 years; Morris Crawcour his brother Brunswick Place City Road London England Gentleman £200;Treasurer of St Augustine's Orphanage Geelong (Roman Catholic) £10-10s; Treasurer Protestant Orphanage Geelong £10-10s;Treasurer Jewish Philanthropic Society Melbourne £25;Sons Samuel Crawcour Elizabeth Street Melbourne financier £500; Michael Crawcour Williamstown financier £500;Trustees £25 each;Real estate and monies to be divided into proportions of one seventh and paid to sons Joseph; Isaac;David;daughter Rebecca Abraham wife of Sydney Abraham; Alice Nyberg daughter wdow Geelong; Edwin son Marborough Victoria financier; son Leon of Castlemaine financier.
    The above form a summary of the will.

    By 1850 Isaac was a bankrupt- The London Gazette 21 June 1850 Court for the Relief of Insolvent Debtors- Isaac Crawcour formerly of 2 Prior Place East Lane Walworth tobacconist and Bill Discounter then of Keene's Row Walworth and of 1 Old Kent Road and Dealer in Miscellaneous Goods, then of 6 High Street Peckham and 1 Old Kent Road all in Surrey, tobacconist, Dentist and Cupper now of 2 St. James's Road Old Kent Road out of business.

    By 1851 Isaac was in Victoria Australia. An early newspaper account records his name- The Argus Melbourne Friday 29 August 1851. Isaac was fined for Sunday Trading at Elizabeth Street-The Argus Melbourne Friday 16 Feb 1855. He was a tobacconist at Main Road The Star Ballarat Victoria Weds 27 July 1859 and a licensed pawnbroker Daylesford The Argus Melbourne Monday 25 Feb 1867.

    The following newspaper articles suggest Isaac Crawcour and family arrived in Melbourne July 1851-
    Adelaide Times Friday 30 My 1851-Passengers Inwards on the "Wellington" Mr and Mrs Crawcour and five children
    The Argus Melbourne Victoria Monday 14 July 1851 Wellington barque 473 tons from London via Adelaide Mr and Mrs Crawcour and family.
    I will post on the birth dates of the Isaac Crawcour children including details from some of the GRO Birth Records I bought some 13-14 years ago and which appear on various Ancestry.Com family trees as down loads.

    The following newspaper articles indicate that Isaac Crawcour was in financial difficulty following a fire to his premises and lack of full insurance:
    The Standard Monday 11 Sept 1843-"A policeman who was rushing out of the burning building with Mr Crawcour's infant son in his arms fell head foremost into a sewer running behind the house, both narrowly escaped suffocation.... " The premises were "not insured for one quarter of his loss".
    The Bradford Observer,and Halifax, Huddersfield and Keighley Reporter Thurs Sept 14 1843-"At an early hour in the morning a fire occurred in the premises of Mr Crawcour tobacconist, situate in Surrey Place Old Kent Road and was not subdued before the whole of the building was destroyed"
    Isaac was also robbed in 1846- Burglary Southwark 3 men were accused of "breaking into the premises of Isaac Crawcour a snuff and cigar manufacturer near the Bricklayer's Arms Old Kent Road" The Morning Post Monday June 22 1846.

    I bought the following GRO Birth Certificates between 2003-2004 for the children of Isaac Crawcour and Esther Cashmore as part of my ongoing research into my Crawcour lines world wide. These records date from 1837 when official records began but it is important to note that not all BMD were registered:

    The following Australian Newspaper articles refer to Alice Nyberg nee Crawcour moving to South Africa and also the burial of Alfred Nyberg her husband:
    The Argus (Melbourne) Saturday 1 March 1884 Warnambool "The funeral of Mr Alfred Nyberg took place today. The deceased was the first Jew who has been interred here..A Jewish official came from Melbourne specifically to consecrate the ground and perform the funeral rites.The deceased had not long been in Warrnambool, having started business as a pawnbroker."

    The Hebrew Standard of Australasia (Sydney) NSW Friday 3 April 1903- "Mrs Nyberg who left here some weeks ago with her son and daughters for South Africa have reached their destinations safely and have settled in Petermauritzberg where Mr Alfred Nyberg is resident."

    Here is data on the parents of Esther Cashmore:
    See Synagogue Scribes NSM 521 MARRIAGE 1814 Joseph Cashmore -father Moshe KASHMAN KASHMAN spouse Alice NATHAN Hebrew name Ali father Mr Meir.

    Joseph Cashmore died in August 1824 at 1 Cutler Street Houndsditch Jeweller. He died intestate and a Letter of Adminstration records his wife Alice recording the letter.

    The Insurance policies record an Alice Cashmore widow 4 Widegate Street 14.06.1826 then 15 Red Lion St Whitechapel 22.06.1826 but there is also an Alice Cashmore Butcher 113 Petticoat Lane 1824-25 and later 22 Whitechapel High St 19.10 1826; 26 Charlotte Terrace Great Charlotte St 05.10.1827-30; 65 Spectacle Alley Whitechapel 1833; 3 Suffolk St Cambridge Road; 6 Brown's Buildings Princes St Rosemary Lane 1834.
    There is a Rebecca Cashmore Gentlewoman 26 White Street Cutler Street 1825 and 28 Cutler St 1826

    Alice Cashmore went to Australia and her death Index record shows- Alice Cashmore b abt 1796 Age 77 died 1873 Victoria father Michael NATHAN; mother Sarah SIMONDS

    The London Banknrupts Records show- The London Gazette 18 Feb 1817
    Mordecai Lazarus and Joseph Cashmore late of Paternoster Row Spitalfields Middlesex Merchants, Glass Dealer, Chapman and co-partners.
    By 1821 Mordecai Lazarus received his Certificate for Bankruptcy but there is no reference to Joseph Cashmore.

    These maybe the parents of Alice Cashmore nee Nathan- Synagogue Scribes Will Extract NA384 Michael Nathan 30 Oct 1811 Butcher St Mary Whitechapel Middlesex wife Sarah. The full will is online at Ancestry.Com but having read the details there is no reference to children.

    The following is a summary of the Will of Samuel Crawcour who died 1923 Victoria Australia:
    Samuel Crawcour late of "Ventnor" Balaclava Road Caulfield Victoria ( formerly of Fitzroy Street St Kilda Victoria
    His trustees-The Equity Trustees Executors and Agency Company 85 Queen Street Melbourne and his daughter Sarah Amelia Esther Alice Barnett 101 Balaclava Road Caulfield. His daughter Sarah referred to as "Amelia"- Bequests to:
    Amelia H Phillips,Isabella A Barnett annuity £100 each; Granddaughter Lydia A Ellis £100 annuity; Daughter Amelia £265 annuity; daughter Rebecca Adelaide Phillips referred to as "Ada" £200 annuity; On the death of Amelia her daughter Isabella A Barnett to receive residue of annuity; on death of Caroline Esher Ellis her residue to be given to her daughter Lydia A Ellis; great grandson Archie Ellis to receive income and annuities if all trustees die and if Archie dies any monies left to be placed in trust to the University of Melbourne as The Samuel Crawcour Bursary for medical students; Bequests to Melbourne Jewish Philanthropic Society £25; Melbourne Hebrew Ladies Benevolent Society £25; St Lilda General Cemetery £50 for up keep of grave and area.
    Samuel specified that any family member who was a recipient of his bequests and who married out of the Jewish faith or became a Christian or any other form of religion would have their bequest payments terminated.
