Omagh Slater's Directory 1846 shows 4 carpenters with surname Maguire, their first names and the street names.
I am keen to find more information about these men, but have had no luck yet. Are their other sources I should try?

The next comprehensive series of records for that area is Griffiths Valuation which, for Omagh, was compiled in 1860.

Gortmoore is actually normally known as Gortmore and is in the parish of Drumragh. It’s just on the edge of Omagh. In the mid 1800s it was agricultural land but today it’s mostly suburbs. Taking James Maguire (or M’Guire) as an example, you can search for him in Gortmore, and you’ll find one James listed. He had plot 19 (1 acre, 2 roods and 20 perches of land, ie just over one and a half acres). There’s no house mentioned so he didn’t live there. He may have lodged with someone else.
You can then follow that plot of land forward using the Valuation revision Books. They will show you when the tenant changed. (Which can indicate when someone died). They go right up to 1929, and are on-line (for the counties of Northern Ireland only) on the PRONI website:
https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/informat...rchives-online
You can then repeat the process for the other 3. If any appear to have died after 1.1.1864, when death registration started, you can search for their deaths on the GRONI site:
https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk
You can also looks for wills on the PRONI wills site (same link as for the Valuation records).
If you are looking for things like apprenticeship records etc, I doubt any exist. You could search the PRONI e-catalogue using their names + carpenter to see if anything comes up (leases, court records etc).ELWYN

I've moved this thread to the Irish forum because Navigating brit Gen (its previous location) is not really intended for research questions, and it may attract the experts here.

Move to the Irish Forum
Thanks for advising the move, Lesley. How do I locate the Irish forum, where the experts are?

Look at the top right of your screen (beside the tree stump). Click on Forum, and choose whatever you want from the drop down menu.
Enjoy.
