Hello all,
My name is Debra, posting from Maryland in the U.S., and I am trying to find any and all information on my Mothers family, the Sparrows. My father had done extensive research on his (my paternal Howe) family prior to his passing away, actually tracing them back to the U.K. not far from where he met and married my mother. Mom very recently passed away, and I wish to find out more about my matriarchal line(s). My mother, Patricia Sparrow, was born in Ipswich, Suffolk in 1932, first child of Herbert (I believe) and Ida Sparrow. I am in sporadic contact with various aunts and uncles living in the U.K., but I decided to reach out here as well and expand my search. I appreciate any and all help offered, and perhaps there is something I can help you with in return.
Thanks for your time and attention,
Debra

I'm glad to see that Christina has found so much useful stuff, because a swift trawl through my large collection of Suffolk Sparrow families has produced nothing apparently relevant. Of course, Ipswich being near the border with Essex, this means very little, and indeed there were Sparrows all over England, any of whom might have had reason for relocating to Ipswich, by the early 20th century.
I will take a more careful look to see if anything turns up.

FreeBMD has a birth registration for a Walter Herbert Sparrow in 1902 [3rd Q] in Tendring registration district, which is/was in the east of Essex, therefore close to Ipswich; the district included Harwich, which shares a route to the sea with Ipswich. The age also fits with the date Christina found for the birth of Ida. So it's looking promising.

One would need his birth certificate to be certain, but it looks as if Walter Herbert Sparrow was son of Edward Sparrow and Sarah Hills, who were married in 1895. This family appears in the 1901 and 1911 censuses in Tendring district; there was also a birth registration for Edward Sparrow there in 1864 [3rd quarter]. I have not yet seen any record for this Sparrow family in the 1871 and 1881 censuses; in 1891 Edward was in the army, having joined the Royal Artillery in 1886: his service records can be seen at FMP, which can be used as a pay-per-view site if you don't have (or don't want to have) a subscription.
FMP also has Walter H, his wife Ida M., and his family in the 1939 General register, but FMP terms preclude my disclosing the details here.

It would seem that the Edmund C Sparrow found by Christina was a younger brother (born 1909) of Walter Herbert. He can be found in the 1939 Gebneral Register at FMP, with his widowed mother mentioned first.
I shall now move on to other things for a while!
