    Welcome to the British-Genealogy forums
If you came to us from Forces War Records reading this will tell you a little about us.

You can apply for your father's service record from the MoD who still hold service records from 1921 onwards.
This 'sticky' explains and gives links to download the application form. You will need 30 pounds and a death certificate and patience waiting for them to arrive.

I'm never sure if you can read this link unless you're registered to Forces War Records
    https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/tutorials
    but it says that
Prior to 1972 Royal Naval personnel were given their service records on discharge. Only pay details were kept for Pension purposes. Therefore the only information held on RN personnel who served prior to 1972 is their Service details (number, rank, name etc) and a list of dates and ships/shore bases.
I know my uncle who served in WW2 has his naval service records, and I have my grandfather's which cover
    about 1885 - 1917.

Please note that you can register on FWR for free. You only need to subscribe (as in 'pay') to access specific records for a specific person.

Hi, I can't find a Shore Station, HMS Victoria. There was at the time HMS Victoria and Albert, accommodation for HMS Excellent "Whale Island". Or, there was a trawler HMT Victoria hired 1940 to 1945. Drake is Plymouth. Nile and Sphinx were Alexandria, Caroline was Northern Ireland. But drawn a blank on Filiot, is that the right spelling?

There were at least two HMS Foliots.

HMS Foliot 1 was a landing craft accounting base at Plymouth
HMS Foliot 111 was a combined operations holding base at Buckleigh, Plymouth.

Dad had been serving in the Med from March 1940 to March 1942.

Then back to HMS Drake and HMS Filiot in Plymouth.

What leave would he have had during that time to go back to his home in Warrington?

    Thank you

I am no military/naval expert but, in my opinion:
Firstly, you will need to know which ships he served on. See post #3, which is tied up with post #2 regarding obtaining service recotfs.
Once you know the names of the ships then (I think) you need to go to Kew to read the ships' logs.

If you know where he/his parents lived in those years you could try searching local newspapers for reports of 'local man on leave' or similar headings'. The British Newspaper Archive (also mostly available on Findmypast) has an increasing number of newspapers available online. Alternatively you would need to enquire at the local library re them having copies. You will need to go to the library, and just read the papers.
