Freddy Longstaff birth registered Alston Cumberland December quarter 1876 Volume 10B Page 433, baptised 31 May 1888, son of Ann Longstaff, no father listed.

You would to purchase his birth certificate to see if it listed a father but I would suggest that it is highly unlikely, as looking on the GRO site there is no mother’s maiden name listed which probably indicates that there isn’t a father listed.

There is an Ann Longstaff listed in the 1871 census in Alston: piece 5197 folio 39 page 33: Kings Arms Lane, Alston, Cumberland
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Gender Age Birth year Occupation Birth place
Hannah Longstaff Head Widow Female 77 1794 Formerly domestic servant Cumberland, England
Ann Longstaff Daughter unmarried Female 28 1843 General servant Cumberland, England
    William M Longstaff Grandson - Male 3 1868 - Cumberland, England

I can’t find her or Freddy in the 1881 census

Similarly William Matthew Longstaff’s birth was registered in Alston Volume 10B Page 373 without a mother’s maiden name being listed. Jan quarter 1868.

Im searching more info on Freds father Hugh Longstaff.
Hi Jonni7, where did you get the name Hugh Longstaff from? Looking at the 1871 census with brother William and his Mother Ann it suggests Ann was unmarried, and there doesn't appear to be a marriage for Hugh Longstaff to Ann

    1871, Alston Cumberland, RG10; Piece: 5197; Folio: 39; Page: 33;
Hannah Longstaff 77, head, widow, Alston
Ann Longstaff 28, dau, unmarried, Alston
William M Longstaff 3, grandson, Alston

In 1881 Ann is also recorded as unmarried.

How certain are you that Ann Longstaff married Hugh Longstaff?

In the 1871 Census she is with son William and down as unmarried, in 1881 she is with William and Freddy and still down as unmarried, it's not until 1891 when she appears married to George Dickinson.

It is possible that the Hugh Longstaff mentioned in William's marriage is a made up name for appearance's sake.

Sorry, the two previous posts must have appeared while I was searching the Censuses.

You may need to get a copy of the Parish Register to see if any remarks have been made as to who the 'spurious' father is. The Parish would be unlikely to give parish relief if the father were known

Thanks ! Longstaff comes from Annīs fathers line. Why did Fred and William get the mothers surname and not the fathers ? How normal was that ? We have done a y-dna 111 and big-y on this line. Neither longstaff/longstaffe or Tate/tates is in matches yet.

I can't find more info on this Thomas Tates.

I should imagine that Fred and William got their mother's surname because she wasn't married to their fathers.

With great difficulty because you don't know where she conceived William.

She have been living locally or she have away in service. Nor as far as I can see is there any evidence in the documentation to suggest that Freddy had the same father as William.
