Hi Jim, I have more evidence that the birth Jun qrt 1850, vol 26, page 23 Abergavenny is probably the right one.Now I am going to request Jennet Sloane (Slocomb?) with vol 26 and page 23 and also James Slocomb without vol and page but with parents as George Slocomb and Mary.
From GRO web site : SLOCOMB, JENNET, Mother's maiden name PHILLIPS
GRO Reference: 1850 J Quarter in ABERGAVENNY Volume 26 Page 23
And a possible marriage for her parents: Sep 1840, Pontypool, vol 26, page 136
George Slocomb also at same GRO ref is Mary Phillips.
Results 11 to 20 of 21

Terrific Alma. It is a biiiiiig help having the new indexes with mother's maiden name on the GRO site isn't it?
So the entry on FreeBMD was a transcription error.
Jim, did you know you can now search on the GRO site Here

Yes Christina, MMN on the new indexes on GRO are a great boon.
I looked at the original sheet on FreeBMD which in 1850 was hand written, it does actually say SLOANE, so the error must have been made when the names were first entered onto the sheet.
Thanks for posting the link to GRO for Jim; I still haven't worked out how to do that, other than by posting the url.Alma

Hi Alma and Christina, Thanks again to you both. I checked the new index lookup for Slocomb, Jennet and it came up with the mothers maiden name Phillips. This is great. I'm almost done with all my post 1837 searches but this will really be a help to others. Jim

As info I did find Jennet's birth certificate with the help of Christina and Alma. Her mother is definitely Mary Ann Phillips and her father was George Slocomb.
My only other loose end in my Wales connection is Thomas Heffron B; abt 1796, D: 1864 at Bedwelly, Monmouthshire, wales and married Martha Davis B: 1796 D:1884. He and Martha had a son my GGrandfather Isaac Heffran B: 1838 for which I have the birth certificate.
I can find very little info on Thomas but clues seem to point to Ireland. Not sure what to do next. Any ideas appreciated. Jim

Hi Alma, You are amazing! I have searched using many variation of the surname but not Efferin. I have seen it spelled Heffran, Heffron, Heferan but never before Efferin. I think this is definitely my family. I got Isaac's birth cerficate and his birthdate jives with him being 12 in 1851. Thanks again for your help. Jim
