    Question Marriage in India, 1831

Could anyone please guide me as to where to look for the details of a marriage in Mysore, India, in October 1831. The husband, William, was in the 48th Regiment, and it is possible that his bride, Elizabeth, was a daughter of a soldier of another regiment. William was born in Ireland, Elizabeth in Canterbury. All I have to go on at the moment is a quote "from an old family bible" (now missing) that it "was a military wedding".
Any help would be much appreciated.

You mention everything but a surname.

The marriage may be on his service record. If he retired before the mid-1850's, you should be able to locate it on The National Archives (TNA) web-site https://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search.asp
In the first field enter his name (try both names to begin with, then just try his surname, remember to search for variant spellings). In the last field, 'department or series code' enter WO97. If you find a match, you can order a copy of his service record online, for which there will be a fee.

His marriage should also be recorded in the Index to Army Chaplains' Returns' of Marriages 1796-1880. You can search this on the pay-per-view web-site 1837 online and order a copy of the certificate from the GRO.

You can search for free some transcribed records at the Families in British India Society (FIBIS) site

The data comes mainly from the British Library’s India Office Records Section (IOR), which has some returns from churches there. You might be lucky and find the marriage.

Default Army marriage in India - thank you

Thank you both, Geoffers, and Susan. Will try all options.
Sorry, the full names of the groom and bride are William CASSIN and Elizabeth BYRNES.

You may also find this useful at some point if your ancestors served and died in India.

Looking at the Army Chaplains' Returns 1796-1880, you'll find entires which seem to fit:

William CASSAIN, Madras, 1831, page 501
Elizabeth BYRNES, Madars, 1831, page 501

There are also a couple of births which may well be connected:

Agnes Franklyn CASSAN, Madras, 1844-6, page 626
Mary Helen CASSAN, Madras, 1847-9, page 383

The National Archives online catalogue shows several CASSIN and CASSAN entries (possibly related??) including:

WO97/622/105 William CASSIN, bn Maryborough, Leix, 48th Foot, discharged aged 39, served 1825-1847
