Default British civilian in Gibraltar 1850s or 1860s

Hi, I'm trying to trace exactly when Mary TANNER (born Chapmanslade, Wiltshire in 1841) went to Gibraltar, and also why and how.

In 1851 (age 11) she is living at home in Corsley, Wiltshire, with her father Thomas TANNER (age 34) and mother Mary Anne Tanner (née COOPER, age 38), brother James (age 7) and sister Charlotte/Charlot (age 5).

I can't find her in the 1861 census.

In July 1871 she marries William MORRIS, a corporal in the ROYAL ENGINEERS, in Gibraltar, and the following year gives birth to a daughter, Frances Mary MORRIS, in Gibraltar.

In 1881 they are all living in Woolwich, London.

Can anyone help me to find out why she would have gone to Gibraltar? Did she go as a servant, or a convict?
How can I find out which ship she travelled on?
How can I find out which year she went?

    Any help very gratefully received.
    Many thanks.

    Default Mary TANNER

Thanks very much for the info below. The person I'm really interested in, though, is Mary TANNER, and how and why she went to Gibraltar.

Do you know of any passenger lists of ships landing in Gibraltar in the 1850s or 1860s?
Or passenger lists of ships leaving the UK for Gibraltar at this time?

How would Mary TANNER have raised the fair to get to Gibraltar? Maybe she went as a servant? Did the Army employ women as servants at this time, and would they have paid her passage?

I have no knowledge of how this poor girl from Wiltshire ended up in Gibraltar - she disappears from the record in 1851 and reappears in 1871.

    Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions?
    Many thanks!

Do you have the marriage certificate, I cannot find it under British nationals armed forces marriages 1761-2005 or British Nationals married overseas

Hi, I found the marriage listed in the Gibraltar National Archives. They married on July 22 1871 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. William MORRIS (age 31) was resident at Hargrave's Barracks, Mary TANNER (age 31) was resident at Prince Edward Road D24 H9. Mary's father was a shepherd.

But what took her to Gibraltar? And how did she get there?

    Many thanks!

Hi, yes, got it!! In the 1871 census, Mary TANNER is a cook in Penge! Wow!

So if she was in Penge in April 1871, and getting married in Gibraltar in July 1871, it seems very likely that she already knew William MORRIS before she went.

I wonder if she went to Gibraltar with the ELLIS family as their cook, or left her post as cook and travelled out to be with him? Interesting...

At least I have a lead... I can try and find some mention of the Ellis family in Gibraltar.

Just one thought. I couldn't see any mention of Mary Tanner in the 1861 census. Can you help with that too?

Genius you are! Thanks so much.
