Lieut. Edward MedleyRN was in the insolvent debtors court at Norwich 12 March 1827 (Norfolk Chronicle 17 March 1827), the Norfolk Chronicle of 17 March 1827 reported that of the 41 cases 38 were discharged, one struck out & two remanded (these two were the only ones named). By 9 July 1827 Lieut. Medley was Commander of HM Plumper heading for the coast of Africa.
The Norfolk Record Office does not have any records relating to this period. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I could look to try and find out what Edward Medley's debt was about. Also would he have been imprisoned prior to his court appearance, on his own or with his family?
The Norfolk Chronicle 17 Feb 1827 - court for the relief of insolvent debtors; stated Lieut. Medley's previous addresses - Sheerness, Yarmouth, Wades Place Mile End, Regent Place Mile End, Coverack & Bacton. These appear to be mostly where he would have been employed with the navy. Does this relate to the period of time he owed the debt? Was being an insolvent debtor a bad thing for your reputation?
Thanks for any advise
Tracey

The London Gazette on line is free a paper described as 'Official Public Record' recording the happenings in British Government and other 'official' business such as Insolvency.
It is unlikely that you will find the reason for the debt.

Well, he certainly had a colourful career but, apart from a spot of piracy, nothing untoward!

Some more about Edward MEDLEY, all dated after 1827, so probably won't help with your insolvency query.

One letter does talk of a loan!

Yes been here too, have copies of most of the letters. He wouldn't accept the loan which I presume was because of whatever happend to get him into financial difficulty in 1826/27

Information about Insolvent Debtors
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insolv...land)_Act_1813
I am away from home at present using mobile and borrowed laptop. I would have been surprised if there had been nothng in the London Gazette as the local papers usually use this for their source of information (syndicated)
