Default 1871 census - help please Joseph BRYAN

    Hi

I have been trying to find the 1871 census records for Joseph BRYAN (b. c. 1816) in Preston, Lancashire. I cannot find him on Findmypast, FamilySearch of FreeCEN ---- perhaps someone can find him on Ancestry.

Joseph was born around 1817, his wife Ellen was born around the same time.
The children that I have discovered through the Lancashire OPC and 1861 census returns are:
    William (1836); Thomas (1840); John (1843); Joseph (1845); Daniel (1848); Richard (1850); George (1852); and Ann Eliza (1855).

I've tried wild card searches on the surname, I've added specific family members to the query but I cannot find them in 1871.

I know they were still in the UK as Joseph died in 1877 but even though his wife Ellen died in 1858; he remarried to an Isabella who subsequently died in 1879.

So I have finally thrown in the towel and am seeking help.

    Thanks
    David

    Hi
His occupation was an Engineer & Millwright and they lived at differing addresses in Preston.

How do I search by that in Findmypast?
I used to know in the previous iterations but I don't seem to be able to find that facility in the newest FMP - or am I just thick?

    Search from here:

I wouldn't worry too much about occupations. John and Ann are there with the younger children from Joseph's second marriage.

    Hello again

I had found that record but discounted it because his occupation had changed from Engineer to Grocer / Provision Dealer. And another reason I discounted it was that when Ann Eliza married in 1876 she gave her father's occupation as Engineer on her marriage certificate.

After revisiting Lancashire OPC I may have to change my mind because Frank's middle name was Hargreaves and that was Isabella's maiden name. So perhaps Joseph did change his occupation after the death of his first wife and Ann gave his first occupation not his current one.

This is the sort of puzzle that makes this such an interesting pastime.

Thanks for your help - Everyone - much appreciated

    David
