They were married in the home of someone (not a relative). I had previously dismissed any church records as they didn't get married in a church but am not thinking that I should revisit this avenue of research. They may have been married by a minister in a private residence.

Gosh, your certificates are not very useful are they! If I have the correct marriage, to Mary PETERS, his marriage transcription on FindmyPast, states that it took place at Holy Trinity church, Adelaide but does not show any father's name so it may well be that none appears on the original record.
Will try to dig some more.
