Hi Watchkeeper, a date of birth or county even a regiment would help largely here. Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire, London?
A service number would be the thing. [male or female]?

I've just tried in the London Gazette. with 1918 in the query there are only 3 mentioned-none with initial H.
Without 1918 mentioned there are lots .I only checked 3 pages, but if you haven't done so here is the link.:

Have you tried for any newspaper reports in his area for that time period?
Old newspapers possibly available via your Library card, or maybe a sub with British newspapers.
Unknown where you are but even local Library may be of assistance.

thought that would narrow it down
There were over 115,000 Military Medals awarded during WW1.

Even if you knew his details, it's unlikely that you would find an official citation. As Wendy suggests, you could try local newspapers.
