    Default Unknown Relatives

Hi. I do hope this photo will be allowed on the site and I am in the right forum for this request.
This is a photo from what looks like the 1940s/50s ?
My Great grandmother Ada Alice Fry Nee Johnston (Sept 1890-June 1988) is in the photo.
This photo must have meant something to her, as she kept it with others. However I have no idea who the wedding party is.
If any one who lives in the surrey area especially the Croydon, Morden areas recognises anyone in the photo, I would be most grateful if you could contact me.
    Kind regards Janette

Given the fact that the groom is wearing uniform I would guess that the wedding took place during WWII (1939-45).

I have a photograph of an aunt and uncle's wedding in 1943 and the bridal party's clothes are almost identical.

As for who the people are, I sorry I can't help.

I agree with Margarita that it's probably wartime, looking at the young lady without a hat standing in front of the door column on the right hand side as you're looking at it. Her hairstyle is called a Victory Roll and that was popular during the war. Unfortunately I don't recognise anyone either.

The relatively small number of younger men in the photo also suggests WW2. It looks like a formal photo, is there a photographer's name or stamp on the picture? That would at least confirm the location.

If it WAS WW2, I'd be surprised if people were able to travel very far to get to the wedding. If you know where your GGM was living then, you could invest a bit of time in looking through FreeBMD's index for that area and those years, to see whether an names look familiar (maybe cousins, etc).

Also, where in the photo is your GGM? If she's in the front row, you've a good chance that the happy couple were related. If she's further back, they may just be friends or neighbours....

I've been wondering if it might be rather later, say mid or even late 1950s? The clothes don't really look like wartime austerity to me - long wedding dresses, ladies' hats etc.

Certainly in my aunt's case (1934) her wedding dress was borrowed as were the bridesmaids dresses, which was why they weren't all the same.

A lot of borrowing probably went on amongst the female guests, as well.

I am not saying you are wrong but people did try to pull out all the stops in any way they could during war time.

For me it's the bridegroom and guest in uniform which clinches it. I think that other than war time necessity men don't normally wear uniform to a wedding unless they are officers.

I looked at this photo and thought the little girl (flower girl) at the front was me at my much older cousin's wedding in 1948. I had a headdress very similar to hers, and a muff, and thought I was the bees knees.

I think that this photo dates from the mid-1940s. First, from 'just looking at it' and, second, from having read what Jayne Shrimpton* says about wedding dress-style in the decade of the 1940s. I have been browsing through her book How to get the most from family pictures. Chapter Five covers 'Family Wedding Photographs', and the 1940s-1950 feature on p220. In brief: (i) groom (often) in uniform (ii) veils worn back on head, tiara-style/halo-like (iii) bridesmaids wore shoulder-length veils (iv) (often) padded shoulders featured (v) wedding dress with slightly-flared skirt without a train.

I think the immediate bridal group in the photo tick most of the boxes. Plus, the little girl on the extreme left is wearing a coat with a velvet collar, which would indicate the 1940s.

The folk in the photo seem quite relaxed and happy. It's a big turn-out. I don't think it is that 'classy' - one of the men has an open collar and no tie. A lot of the men are wearing Brylcreem or such on their hair. Some of the suits are rather baggy - possibly pre-war 'best'; same goes for some of the older ladies - some will be in pre-war finery.

So - it's a large, happy relaxed group. The groom is in uniform but is not an officer. I therefore think that this photo was probably taken between, say, September 1945 and the autumn of 1946. That's why they are all happy and relaxed - the war is over, even if the groom has not been de-mobbed.

So 1946 as the answer to the question?

My gut feeling was also soon after the end of the war - the lance corporal (I think) on the far right is wearing medal ribbons - he doesn't look old enough for them to be from WW1 - so from WW2 and they wouldn't have been issued until after hostilities ceased.

The groom has them too I think - but not so clearly shown due to markings on his pocket flap

Probably a specialist forum such as WW2 Talk would be able to pin down how soon after the war a man was likely to have received his medals/ribbons to further assist in dating the picture

Do you use Face book? if so there is a Croydon page which may be of help. Visitors can post photos & queries, I have done so myself although not found a result. Yours however is more recent & may have success.
