    Default Multiple Baptisms

    Guys

I am having trouble with what appears to be people getting baptized twice. They are non conformist baptisms. I originally thought they were two families having the same named parents but the co-incidence of names seems so unlikely. here is an example: Children of Bartholomew Coombe and Anne all from the same village.

    Joan Coombe U 25 Aug 1730
    Joan Coombe F 25 Oct 1730

    Phips Coombe M 16 Jan 1732
    Phips Coombe U 16 Jan 1732

    Alexander Coombe M 30 Mar 1735
    Alexander Coombe U 30 Mar 1735
    Alexander Coombe M 01 Aug 1736
    Alexander Coombe U 01 Aug 1736

    Thomas Coombe U 15 Aug 1738
    Thomas Coombe M 15 Oct 1738

    Joseph Coombe M 18 Apr 1770
    Joseph Coombe U 18 Apr 1770

    Susannah Coombe F 29 Apr 1771
    Susannah Coombe U 29 Apr 1771

I have also come across it in other baptisms in this area. Any suggestions?

    Thanks Guys

I am obviously being very stupid.

If the 'M' is for male and the 'F' is for female (although I can't see why that matters), what does the 'U' stand for?

    Regards (perplexed)

I think that it's double entry rather than double baptism. The names & dates are all the same.
Did you get this from the actual register pages or a transcription?

I've seen this in my OPS - the outgoing Minister was very elderly and his record keeping left much to be desired, when a new, younger man came in, he called in all the baptismal certificates he could, and entered the lot at the start of his registers. This means that where the old guy actually registered a baptism, it ended up twice n the register.

    U normally means unspecified.

    Thanks Guys,

I thought it may be something like mis-transcriptions, for example Joan being a month out, however poor Alexander is 1 year and 5 months out.

I also thought it may be due to different databases, some of these come from the England's Birth and Christenings 1538 - 1975 and some from England and Wales Non-Conformist Record Indexes however for Alex, they have rwo entries on each with two different dates.

I will have to order in the original films to see if there is a difference.

    regards and thanks again

I think you're looking at different transcription databases.

I would advise you to look at the originals at bmdregisters or you can rent the films from the Mormons. If there still appears to be something odd, by all means get back to us.

Perhaps the first Alexander died and they named the next son Alexander
